Trump assaulted his former attorney Michael Cohen, a major witness in his New York criminal prosecution, two days before the trial. Trump said on Truth Social, "Has Michael Cohen been charged with LYING? This Judge and these thugs only prosecute Trump supporters! Dark day for our nation."
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's criminal case centers on Cohen's claims that Trump ordered him to facilitate hush money payments to Stormy Daniels during the 2016 campaign. President Trump's reference is unclear, although Cohen testified in court last year that he lied to Congress about his finances.
"He attacks relentlessly because he does. He assaults the judge, the judge's daughter, witnesses, and everyone else thinking this is a good tactic. Not working. Indeed, I'm worried. And a little nervous."
The new Trump posts may breach a gag order prohibiting him from making extrajudicial statements regarding trial witnesses.
In March, state Judge Juan Merchan issued a gag order prohibiting Trump from "making or directing others to make public statements about known or reasonably foreseeable witnesses concerning their potential participation in the investigation or in this criminal proceeding."
Merchan extended the gag order to Bragg and Merchan's relatives after Trump's social media attacks on her daughter.
Trump faces 34 first-degree fabricating business record charges for "to conceal criminal conduct that hid damaging information from the voting public during the 2016 presidential election," prosecutors say.
Trump again criticized the district attorney's office on Saturday, writing, "WHY DIDN’T THE MANHATTAN D.A. BRING THIS RIDICULOUS & LAMBASTED CASE SEVEN YEARS AGO? Because they're corrupt and wanted to do election interference against Crooked Joe Biden's opponent!"
