'Major hurdles': Biden's abortion promise's reality check. (PART-2)

Last week, Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer promoted a referendum campaign to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution in Arizona.

We must discuss the real risk. All 50 states, not just Arizona. A national prohibition may undermine all the progress we've accomplished in Michigan or rights that have always been in California or New York.

Biden needs a Democratic trifecta to restore federal abortion rights, emphasizing the House races. Republican control of the House or Senate next year would kill the cause.

A Biden campaign official stated Monday that the White House supports the Women's Health Protection Act, which would reinstate Roe v. Wade and expand federal abortion rights. The spokeswoman said the president “will continue to call on Congress to pass a federal law that restores the protections of Roe.”

A tall order. Democrats have 51 Senate votes. They are poised to lose West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, putting them at 50. Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego is running to replace retiring Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, I-Ariz. Gallego's team told that he supports a filibuster carveout to codify abortion rights with a majority vote.

Gallego replacing Sinema and Democrats holding their seats would give them 50 Senate votes to support the filibuster carveout to codify abortion rights.

Democrats must defend Senate seats in tough states including Nevada, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, with their best odds of flipping Republican-held seats in red-leaning Texas and Florida.

A spokeswoman for Florida Democratic Senate candidate Debbie Mucarsel-Powell indicated she would support a filibuster carveout for the Women's Health Protection Act.

The current Senate Democrats support filibuster piercing except Manchin and Sinema. Everyone voted to repeal it in 2022 to enact a federal voting rights bill. They now include Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., a filibuster opponent.
