Colorado groups say they've collected enough signatures to place an abortion rights measure on the ballot.

The November ballot will likely include a proposed amendment to Colorado's constitution that would entrench abortion access. Reproductive rights advocates claimed Friday they had collected enough signatures.

Coloradans for Protecting Reproductive Freedom, the group leading the drive, stated it had collected over 225,000 registered voter signatures, more than the 124,000 needed by April 26 to qualify for this fall's ballot.

The group stated Friday that it had met the criteria in all but three districts and was just short by 100 signatures in the three districts. They believed they would meet the thresholds in the coming days.

Coloradans for Protecting Reproductive Freedom campaign director Jess Grennan said Arizona's near-total abortion ban showed how vulnerable every state is, and will remain, without constitutional abortion protections.

Ballot measures like Proposition 89 are our first line of defense against government overreach and our best tool to protect the freedom to make personal, private healthcare decisions, which should never depend on health insurance or who is in office because a right without access is a right in name only ", she added.

Colorado is one of 11 states where a citizen-led ballot campaign seeks to constitutionalize abortion rights. In Maryland, New York, and Florida, where the Supreme Court recently upheld a six-week abortion restriction, the initiatives are on the ballot.

Colorado has no abortion restrictions, unlike many other states. The state is one of six with no gestational limitations for abortions. Women from conservative states where abortion is limited or prohibited can travel to Colorado for services.

Organizers are confident they will win because abortion rights supporters defeated a 2020 ballot initiative to restrict abortion rights 59% to 41%, a better margin of victory in the solidly blue state than Joe Biden's in the presidential race.
