Actress Margot Robbie is currently filming a Monopoly-themed feature film.

After Barbie Land, Margot Robbie is moving on to Monopoly.

Robbie's LuckyChap, Tom Ackerley, and Josie McNamara are making a live-action film based on the popular real estate board game. Hasbro Entertainment, Monopoly's backers, will produce.

In December 2023, Lionsgate acquired eOne, extending its board game production rights. The studio says Monopoly is the most famous board game, with 99% global awareness. Since 1935, it has sold approximately half a billion copies in over 100 countries.

Robbie and company's aim to tell a story from Monopoly's two dimensions is unknown. Who plays Rich Uncle Pennybags, the game's mascot? Will they pass Go? Will $200 be collected? No wonder Lionsgate chose them for the challenge. LuckyChap's "Barbie," inspired on the popular Mattel doll, was 2023's highest-grossing film at $1.4 billion.

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson intimated that LuckyChap has “a clear point of view” on the next “Monopoly” film without providing details. He announced it during CinemaCon, the annual movie theater trade show in Las Vegas. The announcement was hailed by a crowded Colosseum at Caesars Palace of cinema owners.

After the success of “Barbie,” LuckyChap, who worked on “I, Tonya” and “Promising Young Woman,” is in demand. It recently sponsored the $15 million Sundance coming-of-age feature “My Old Ass,” which Amazon MGM Studios bought. The business will produce Wilde's Christmas comedy “Naughty” for Universal Pictures next.

“Monopoly is a top property—pun intended,” remarked LuckyChap. "Like all great IP, this game has resonated worldwide for generations, and we are so excited to bring it to life alongside Lionsgate and Hasbro."

Zev Foreman, head of film at Hasbro Entertainment, stated, “Monopoly, one of the most iconic games in the world, provides incredible storytelling opportunities. We're excited to bring this iconic piece of popular culture to the big screen with LuckyChap and Lionsgate's distinctive vision.” James Myers manages “Monopoly” for the studio. Robert Melnik oversaw studio deals.
